This is a spinal condition that affects the lower vertebrae. It causes the lower vertebrae to slip forward onto the bone directly, creating a very painful friction in the back. Aside from lower back pain symptoms can include stiffness in the back and legs, and lower back tenderness.

How We Treat It:

Nonsurgical Treatment

  • Take a break from strenuous activities and sports.
  • Over the counter medication like Aleve or Ibuprofen. If those medications don’t work, steroid medication injections may also be the next option.

Surgical Treatment

  • Typically, surgery due to spondylolisthesis typically involves spinal decompression, with or without fusion. Decompression alone is almost never done in isthmic spondylolisthesis. Studies show fusion with decompression may give a better outcome than decompressioin alone.
